open source CMS not for everyone

it’s shocking, i know. what individual or company doesn’t want the ability to manage their web content when they please without having to hire an extra employee or pay an outside developer to update simple content? well, i can think of two: a person without the web savvyness to learn a new system, and someone who doesn’t have the time.

it’s clear that open source CMS’s have caught on (as of today, wordpress has a content management system market share of 55.4%). and as a result, proprietary CMS usage is declining. but the subject of this post isn’t to compare open vs. proprietary CMS’s. we just want to make the point that in an online world where open source CMS is killin’ it right now, there are still going to be instances where it doesn’t make sense to use it.

[as a side note, it’s interesting to watch the tumblr community grow. in terms of usage, it’s tiny compared to more established systems, but watch out....]
