1958 and 1964 nyc subway maps

1964 world’s fair subway map

since i have mild obsessions with both print design and the new york city subway system, i find these vintage subway maps to be incredibly awesome. if you’ve spent any amount of time using the nyc transit system, you know that the proportions and geography of these maps is skewed. i agree that it does make the information more accessible, but i wonder how the creators of these maps make decisions on how to skew it. thanks to the subway nut for sharing these maps with the world.

at any rate, i think i’m gonna print one of these out and start to use it instead of what the mta has going on now. sure some of the info may be wrong, but it’s a good deal more visually appealing. maybe i’ll even use terms like “14st line” or “canarsie line” instead of “L train.” it’s more fun to say canarsie anyway.

Interesting post. I have made a twitter post about this. Others no doubt will like it like I did.
