the story of the daileyspeople greeting cards

i feel like i haven’t really articulated the story of the daileyspeople greeting cards in much depth, but i think it’s something people might enjoy, so, here it is;

the daileyspeople greeting cards are a series of cards based on old photos from my family (you can view the cards and the photos that they are based on using the preceeding link). a couple of years ago, i made a trip to memphis for my grandmother’s, marguerite crafton, funeral. as is the case in any death, she left somethings behind that weren’t particularly “valuables,” per se, so they weren’t willed. one of these things was a photo album full of old photos from my grandparent’s families’ lives. they ranged in dates from the 1910s to the 80s or so. they blew me away. i was really struck by the fact that my grandparents were not always old people. and yes, we know this in our heads, but i don’t think we always meditate on it and really understand that they’re not just “grandma and grandpa.” mine were/are ralph and marguerite crafton and iris and waymon webb. these photos froze them in moments of time when they were young, strong and energetic. i wish i could have known them like that, and it is my belief that one day i will.

so, my goal in creating this line was to, at least in some small part, preserve the memory of my family heritage in way that was beautiful, memorable and useful. i thought a series of greeting cards was appropriate. i feel like these cards a more unique and intimate means of expression that a standard hallmark. there’s a story in them. there is a very human element intrinsic in each card.

i also like the imperfections that are inherent in the linocut printing process. linocut printing like family life takes a lot of time, patience and work, and there are many flaws and imperfections in both. but if done right, the result is something beautiful, and often inexpressible.

these cards are available at our goods shop.
