a few months ago, i was scanning the garbage heaps as i often do while walking to work (you wouldn’t believe what people throw out!) and i found one of these clocks in pretty good looking condidtion (it didn’t work but it still looked great).

of course i snatched it, cleaned it up and hung it on the wall right outside of our office door… but i didn’t hang it very well, and one good door slam sent the clock to the floor and into sundry pieces (boo…) i was pretty annoyed by this, but the translucent plastic map and the paper that scrolled behind the map with the times that show through the windows were still and tact. so, i kept them and threw everything else out.
i thought and thought about how to up-cycle these two pieces into something cool, as they had such a great character about them.
eventually, i cut the map into slices and used it as an insert in a retangular lamp.

the paper with the times on it is an incredible work of typography, and i will supply you with a picture of that soon too. but it’s on the wall at my apt. right now and i’m in the office.
i guess the moral is;
1. dig in the trash.
2. break the cool thing that you found in the trash.
3. make something cool out of the salvaged pieces.
or;
1. use your imagination, experiment and revel in unorthodoxy.
